Summer is here and teens all over America are scrambling for jobs. It is very clear that this year of 2010 is no better for job hunters than last year as the economy has not improved. That means lots of teens face the possibility of not being able to get jobs again this summer.
In the current job market, it is common for teenagers to face a lot of rejection. If you are a teen that has been turned down for multiple jobs, you need to make sure you are not making any critical mistakes that might be contributing to your failure.
Most older teens have cell phones and probably use that number as a contact number for employers. But have you ever thought about the voice mail message you have on that phone and whether it sounds professional?
There are a lot more teens looking for jobs than there are actual jobs. This means that employers have the luxury of being very picky when choosing the people they hire. A childish sounding voice mail on your cell phone may be enough by itself to have an employer not hire you. You should make sure your phone message is well thought out and remember that it will be an adult listening to it.
Likewise, the email address you are using could be contributing to your failure at getting a job. Your resume and any job applications you fill out should have a place for your email and just like your voice mail message, your email should look professional. Many teens have clever or fun emails that reflect their character but these should not be used for employers.
It is all right to have an email from a free service such as AOL or Yahoo as a lot of adults have them too. However, you shouldn’t have something like “JasonDigsSally(at)Yahoo.com” as that will be something that will immediately turn off any employer. If a manager sees you have used an email like that for a contact, they may just move on to the next applicant who appears to be a more serious worker.
This year, as last year was, is a hard time for any teenager to find a job. You need to keep trudging on and apply at as many places you can to give yourself the best opportunity. You also need to make sure you are not making any silly mistakes like the ones described above that will hurt your chances.
